Racing at Aintree doesn’t
happen every day, so when it does, it’s
always a special occasion. Home of the
John Smith’s Grand National, Aintree is
one of the world’s most famous
racecourses. With over two miles of
luscious green racetrack, and horse
racing’s biggest stars taking to this
jumps only course, racing here is always a
sight to behold at one of Aintree’s six
other racedays outside of the Grand
National meeting. The course is home of
the Grand National steeplechase, one of
the most famous races in the world.
Prior to the event being held at Aintree,
the race was run in the nearby district of
Maghull. Steeplechasing at Aintree was
introduced in 1839, though flat racing had
teken place there for many years prior to
this. It is regarded as one of the
most difficult of all courses to
successfully complete, with 16
steeplechase fences including The Chair,
Canal Turn and Becher's Brook. These are
so infamous that even their names strike
fear into the most professional of
jockeys. All fences bar the water jump are
covered with spruce unlike any other
course in British national hunt racing.
Four other races take place over the
National fences. These are the Topham
Chase (formerly known as the John Hughes
Trophy Chase) and the Fox Hunters' Chase
at the Grand National meeting and the
Grand Sefton Handicap Chase and Becher
Handicap Chase in the November meeting.
Within the large National course there is
also the smaller Mildmay course containing
hurdles and fences. These fences are made
of traditional national hunt material. The
only fence common to the National and
Mildmay courses is the water jump.

Queen
Anne liked nothing better than to hunt
in Windsor Forest and it was in the
early 18th century that she discovered
for herself this open heathland which
she thought an ideal place, not five
miles from Windsor, for "horses to
gallop at full stretch". She founded the
famous race-course there in 1711. In
July 2004, the Royal Borough of Windsor
& Maidenhead granted planning
permission for the redevelopment of
Ascot Racecourse, which enabled the main
scheme to commence in October 2004 as
planned . Ascot Racecourse is
delighted to announce that Royal Ascot
returned to its Berkshire home in

Cartmel is a small
racecourse in the village of Cartmel, now
in the County of Cumbria, historically in
Lancashire before 1974. Meetings are held
on the May and August Bank Holidays.
Although the racecourse is small, it is
noted as having a four furlong run-in, the
longest in Britain. The earliest written account of
racing at Cartmel dates back to 1856. The
course was supported by local landowners.
Until World War II it was a very small
course featuring primarily amateur
jockeys, but in the second half of the
20th century the racing programme was
expanded and professionalised. The course
is situated on the Holker Estate, and in
1998 Lord Cavendish bought out the
previous management team. Cartmel was the site of the Gay
Future 'coup' in 1974 that involved
switching horses before a race and relying
on the lack of communications at the
course. It is also known amongst
racegoers for the track leading up to and
away from the course.

Doncaster is one of the oldest
(and in terms of physical capacity -
largest) established centres for horse
racing in Britain, with records of
regular race meetings going back to the
16th Century. In 1600 the corporation
tried to put an end to the races because
of the number of ruffians they
attracted, but by 1614 it acknowledged
failure and instead marked out a
racecourse. For entertainment, you'll
find the sheer excitement of a day at
Doncaster Racecourse hard to beat. For
sheer spectacle, atmosphere and
excitement a day at Doncaster Races is a
tradition that is hard to beat. Race
days here have been drawing appreciative
crowds for centuries and Doncaster has
long been regarded as one of the finest
racecourses in Europe and the best place
for horse racing in Yorkshire. Our
spectacular new race day, hospitality,
conference and exhibition facilities
will truly match the exceptional quality
of our racing. For all race goers, horse
racing at Doncaster, is a whole new

Huntingdon Racecourse is a
flat, right-handed circuit of
approximately 1 mile 3 furlongs which
provides excellent viewing. There are nine
fences to a circuit, the open ditch in
front of the grandstand providing a real
spectacle. Huntingdon’s free draining
nature often provides good ground and this
coupled with the lack of undulations tends
to favour the speedier type of horse as
there is not such an emphasis on stamina.
Bold jumping front runners tend to do well

Ludlow
Tradition
has
it
that in the fourteenth century soldiers
from Ludlow Castle came here to match
their horses. There is certainly a
record of racing in 1729.The
course retains not only its Edwardian
character but also a strong club
atmosphere. Though now a National Hunt
course, jumping did not start until the
mid-nineteenth century and even today
the hurdles track is for a large part
separate and follows for 1 mile of the
original flat course.

Uttoxeter
On
the 3rd May 2007 Uttoxeter
Racecourse will
celebrated 100 years of racing. In
1907 admission to the racecourse cost
just one shilling (5p) and was largely
patronised by the nobility, gentry and
sportsmen of the county. It was in 1988
when the late Sir Stanley Clarke took
over, that the transformation into the
racecourse that we know today truly
began. Uttoxeter was turned into an
award winning racecourse, with a
reputation for customer service and
innovation.In that first year
Uttoxeter Racecourse hosted only five
meetings. Now, Uttoxeter Racecourse
holds 24
race meetings spread evenly
through the year. Whether it is National
Hunt Racing in winter, or glorious

Experience
the unique blend of royal heritage and
intimate atmosphere that is Royal
Windsor Racecourse. Over the years,
we've played host to many exciting and
successful events - our famous
summertime Monday night racing is just

to horse racing dating back to the era
of Henry VIII, the first race meeting at
Royal Windsor was not held until 1866.
Of course, Royal patronage is no
