THE HISTORY OF HORSE RACING
bywww.britishhorseracing.com
The sport of racing horses in competition is one of the world's oldest.

Horseracing's origins lie in Central Asia, whose diverse, often nomadic populations, were the first to domesticate the horse, and who raced competitively over 6000 years ago.

Later, horseracing became a feature of the Ancient Olympic Games after being introduced in 680 B.C. in chariot form. Some 32 years after this, horseback racing as we are more familiar with today was brought to the games, though neither saddles nor stirrups were used.

From here the practice of horseracing was spread, famously, to the Roman Empire. It became a popular event across the Empire's provinces; the Circus Maximus being a particularly famous venue. Indeed, in 210 A.D., the Roman Empire brought horseracing closer to home. At a Roman encampment in Wetherby, Yorkshire (where a racecourse can still be found today), local horses were matched against Arabian horses brought to England by the Roman Emperor Severus Septimus.

The Godolphin ArabianBy the middle-ages, English knights themselves were bringing back horses to Britain from the Arabian Peninsular; horses that they had 'acquired' during the Crusades. With their introduction the origins of horseracing as we know it today were born.

Central to this were the three 'foundation sires', all foaled in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
Their names were the Byerley Turk, the Godolphin Arabian and the Darley Arabian.
All of today’s nearly 500,000 Thoroughbreds are descended from these three horses, and, indeed, recent research suggests that as many as 95% of male Thoroughbreds can be traced back to the last of these alone. Somewhat strangely, none of these horses ever raced competitively as far as we know.

It was in this same period that 'The Sport of Kings' had its only reigning monarch to ride a winner, as Charles II claimed Newmarket's Town Plate in 1671. The committment of the rest of the field is something lost to antiquity.

During the centuries that followed the foundation sires’ introduction more stallions were brought to Britain, and bred with the progeny of these three sires. One of the most famous, both as a racer and as a sire, was Eclipse, so called because he was foaled during the annular eclipse of the 1st April 1764.
Eclipse, with his distinctive
                                hind-leg sock
In eighteen races he was never headed, let alone beaten, and never needed to be whipped or spurred. Retiring to stud in 1771, he sired three of the first five Derby winners.

The market for fast racehorses was clearly developing fast, and so too was the relationship that remains synonymous with horseracing today; that between the sport and gambling.
At first, matching was the overriding method with which to bet on race horses. One particularly fast animal would be challenged against another, and, for those that could afford it, a wager on such events proved a popular diversion. That the nobility were most able to do this contrbuted to the now famous sobriquet that racing acquired: 'the sport of kings'.
By the time of Queen Anne's reign (1702-1714), match-racing was gradually being superseded by races involving larger numbers of horses and greater numbers of spectators placing money on the outcome.

As horseracing became an increasingly large industry, it was decided that a regulatory authority was needed to administer the sport. In this capacity The Jockey Club was formed in 1750 (whose administrative duties are now rendered by this Authority).

The Derby at Epsom, 1821 by
Théodore Géricault By the end of the century, the first bookmaker, Ogden, was set up at Newmarket. Around the same time, the foundations of the five races we now call the Classics were being laid. The year 1776 saw the first running of the St. Leger at Doncaster (though it was not formally called this until two years later); 1779 was the inaugural year of the Epsom Oaks; 1780 the Epsom Derby; and 1809 and 1814 the first Newmarket 2000 and 1000 Guineas, respectively.

As the sport burgeoned in size, Weatherbys was formed in 1770 to keep a record of all thoroughbreds in the country. The results were published in the General Stud Book, which has been updated and re-printed ever since.

With the advent of state-of-the-art grandstands, sophisticated training facilities, and advanced camera technology, today's horseracing has clearly come a long way from its roots in antiquity, but its essential characteristic, as a thrilling sport with the chance of winning big, remains at the core of the sport's philosophy.

Racing at Aintree doesn’t happen every day, so when it does, it’s always a special occasion. Home of the John Smith’s Grand National, Aintree is one of the world’s most famous racecourses. With over two miles of luscious green racetrack, and horse racing’s biggest stars taking to this jumps only course, racing here is always a sight to behold at one of Aintree’s six other racedays outside of the Grand National meeting. The course is home of the Grand National steeplechase, one of the most famous races in the world.  Prior to the event being held at Aintree, the race was run in the nearby district of Maghull. Steeplechasing at Aintree was introduced in 1839, though flat racing had teken place there for many years prior to this.  It is regarded as one of the most difficult of all courses to successfully complete, with 16 steeplechase fences including The Chair, Canal Turn and Becher's Brook. These are so infamous that even their names strike fear into the most professional of jockeys. All fences bar the water jump are covered with spruce unlike any other course in British national hunt racing. Four other races take place over the National fences. These are the Topham Chase (formerly known as the John Hughes Trophy Chase) and the Fox Hunters' Chase at the Grand National meeting and the Grand Sefton Handicap Chase and Becher Handicap Chase in the November meeting. Within the large National course there is also the smaller Mildmay course containing hurdles and fences. These fences are made of traditional national hunt material. The only fence common to the National and Mildmay courses is the water jump.

Queen Anne liked nothing better than to hunt in Windsor Forest and it was in the early 18th century that she discovered for herself this open heathland which she thought an ideal place, not five miles from Windsor, for "horses to gallop at full stretch". She founded the famous race-course there in 1711. In July 2004, the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead granted planning permission for the redevelopment of Ascot Racecourse, which enabled the main scheme to commence in October 2004 as planned . Ascot Racecourse is delighted to announce that Royal Ascot returned to its Berkshire home in 2006.

Cartmel is a small racecourse in the village of Cartmel, now in the County of Cumbria, historically in Lancashire before 1974. Meetings are held on the May and August Bank Holidays. Although the racecourse is small, it is noted as having a four furlong run-in, the longest in Britain.  The earliest written account of racing at Cartmel dates back to 1856. The course was supported by local landowners. Until World War II it was a very small course featuring primarily amateur jockeys, but in the second half of the 20th century the racing programme was expanded and professionalised. The course is situated on the Holker Estate, and in 1998 Lord Cavendish bought out the previous management team. Cartmel was the site of the Gay Future 'coup' in 1974 that involved switching horses before a race and relying on the lack of communications at the course.  It is also known amongst racegoers for the track leading up to and away from the course.

Huntingdon Racecourse is a flat, right-handed circuit of approximately 1 mile 3 furlongs which provides excellent viewing. There are nine fences to a circuit, the open ditch in front of the grandstand providing a real spectacle. Huntingdon’s free draining nature often provides good ground and this coupled with the lack of undulations tends to favour the speedier type of horse as there is not such an emphasis on stamina. Bold jumping front runners tend to do well here in particular.

Tradition has it that in the fourteenth century soldiers from Ludlow Castle came here to match their horses. There is certainly a record of racing in 1729.The course retains not only its Edwardian character but also a strong club atmosphere. Though now a National Hunt course, jumping did not start until the mid-nineteenth century and even today the hurdles track is for a large part separate and follows for 1 mile of the original flat course.

Uttoxeter

On the 3rd May 2007 Uttoxeter Racecourse will celebrated 100 years of racing. In 1907 admission to the racecourse cost just one shilling (5p) and was largely patronised by the nobility, gentry and sportsmen of the county. It was in 1988 when the late Sir Stanley Clarke took over, that the transformation into the racecourse that we know today truly began. Uttoxeter was turned into an award winning racecourse, with a reputation for customer service and innovation. In that first year Uttoxeter Racecourse hosted only five meetings. Now, Uttoxeter Racecourse holds 24 race meetings spread evenly through the year. Whether it is National Hunt Racing in winter, or glorious summer jumping, you are sure to find a fixture that suits you.

Proud to be voted Racecourse for 16 consecutive years by the Racegoers Club, York delivers quality racing throughout the flat season – an impressive number of the UK’s Pattern Races as well as several of the most prestigious handicap races in Europe. Racing at York dates back to the Roman Emperor Severus, moving to its current Knavesmire site in the eighteenth century where the infamous Highwayman Dick Turpin was hanged. The racecourse boasts award winning modern stands, 2 Listed buildings and a recently refurbished champagne terrace adjacent to a classic galloping track.

RACING COLOURS
from www.britishhorseracing.com
Welcome to our handy guide to some of the biggest colours in racing!

Every race horse owner must register at least one, unique set of colours (or 'silks'). This enables punters and stewards to quickly identify runners and who they belong to.  Such is the demand for certain designs that some colours can sell for thousands, or even tens of thousands, of pounds. Cherished colours, those that have a particularly interesting or long history, are often the most expensive, as are 'plain' silks consituted of just a single colour (for example Godolphin's Royal Blue, or John and Sue Magnier's Dark Blue). So take a look at the designs below and if you think you've got a better idea for a design, or if you fancy buying your own set, then remember to check out our Racing Colours Page. Even if you just want to play around with some combinations, then feel free to have an experiment and see what suits you best! If you need some inspiration, check out Our Favourites at the bottom of this page!

At London 2012, Greenwich Park will host the Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian competitions, plus the combined running and shooting event of the Modern Pentathlon.

Greenwich Park includes the Old Royal Naval College and National Maritime Museum, which, together with Greenwich Park, are part of a World Heritage Site
A temporary Cross Country course is being designed for the Park, while a temporary main arena will also be built within the grounds of the National Maritime Museum.

Point to Point Websites

Racing Network
www.racing-network.co.uk
Horse
The chaotic design may remind you of a particularly garish jockey's tunic, but there's plenty of worthwhile information on the Racing Network site.
As well as the latest news and results, there's a list of horses and trainers to follow and plenty of statistics and information on past form. A well-used message board gives the site a friendly feel and, who knows, you might even glean a few profitable tips.
Racing Post
www.racingpost.co.uk
Horse
The design might be a little unimaginative, but this site is a goldmine for all those serious about racing, with all the latest news, results and opinion on the gee-gees.
If you're fond of the odd flutter, you'll especially like the daily analysis of the best odds available and the in-depth guides to major races. There's also fun to be had comparing the performances of the major tipsters and a comprehensive archive.
Sporting Life
www.sporting-life.com/racing/news
Horse
Sporting Life is synonymous with the latest racing news and the website doesn't disappoint.
The plain design has remained fairly static since the site's inception, but the breadth and depth of the information on offer has improved beyond recognition. Regular columns by some of the most respected names in racing preview upcoming meetings and advise you who to back and who to avoid, while a simple registration procedure allows you to access the very latest results and prices.
Aintree
www.aintree.co.uk
Horse
The Grand National is the most famous horse race in the world and once a year the nation's eyes are on Aintree. Everyone from hardened gamblers to sweet old Grannies has a punt on The National and you'd be well advised to visit this site before you place your bets (online, of course).
This well-organised site allows you to whet your appetite, by finding out about famous races and horses of days gone by, as well as helping you plan your trip - with a section devoted to travel details and ticketing arrangements.
British Horseracing Board
www.bhb.co.uk
Horse
This official site for the governing body of the sport is very nicely presented and contains a surprising amount of useful information. At one end of the spectrum, there's an excellent guide to making the most of your day at the races, complete with impressive multimedia elements. At the other, there's plenty of information for those who want to go the whole hog and buy their own racehorse. Particularly useful for potential owners is the list of registered trainers.
Channel 4 Guide to Racing
www.channel4.com/sport/racing_c4
Horse
One of the best things about Channel Four's extensive coverage is the characters involved and it's made an impressive effort to extend their influence to this website.
Irascible rogue John McCririck features heavily, together with his trademark hand signals, and the other presenters also lend a hand. Each delivers expert opinion and previews upcoming races in entertaining style.
There's also a great introduction to the daunting world of yankees, trebles and each-way bets, with a comprehensive guide to betting.
Come Racing
www.comeracing.co.uk
Horse
If you've always fancied putting on your fancy hat and having a day out at the gee-gees but are unsure where to go then you should take a look at this lively site. Compiled by the British Racecourse Association it includes details of all 59 courses in the UK and a nice interactive map to point you in the right direction. There's also an annual calendar for each course so you know when to go, together with a list of special events ranging from big race days to medieval jousts.
Racing Chronicle
www.racing-chronicle.co.uk
Horse
Most horse racing sites seem to believe that less is more, with pages of dry results and statistics followed by more pages of results and statistics. Not this one, though. Racing Chronicle doesn't have the depth of other sites but the stunning photographs capture racing in all its thunderous, colourful glory.
Another bonus is the speed with which the site is updated - by most afternoons you can see action shots of the favourites romping to victory or falling at the first.
