Wiltshire has played a significant role in the history of this region. Wilton, near Salisbury, was once the "heade town of Wessex and Wileshire" and it is said that the county originally grew out of Wilton. The nearby village of Old Sarum has also played a significant role in the county's history, being popular with both the Saxons and the Normans. It was also the site of the original Cathedral in the southern part of Wiltshire, preceeding Salisbury Cathedral. The county has been host to a number of notable battles, including Alfred`s defeat of the Danes at Ethandune where despite tremendous odds and a seamingly impregnable hill-fort, he used all his guile and cunning to win a famous victory. The civil war battle of Roundway Hill near Devizes also figures prominantly in history. In more recent times, the county, especially Trowbridge in the west, was renowned the world over for its quality woollen products.Alas, all mills are now confined to memory and text, although Trowbridge now hosts a museum where details of this aspect of the county's past can be explored. Swindon, which means 'pig hill' to the north, was once the centre of Brunel's Great Western Railway and until quite modern times produced trains and rolling stock for British Railways. Sadly, this trade has also been lost but Swindon now boasts a number of hi-tech industries and the GWR name lives on, albeit in the form of an extremely popular commercial radio station |

Travel the South West of England with the
Great British Heritage Pass - explore the stunning
South Western regions and England heritage
properties of Bristol, Bath, Cornwall, Devon,
Cirencester, Wiltshire, Christchurch and more.Your tour of South West England begins at
Lacock Abbey, a 13th century abbey converted into a
house in 1540, with 18th century Gothic alterations.
It was also used for the filming of various interior
scenes at Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films.Next head off to Bath to see the Roman
Baths and Pump Room, the extensive remains of Roman
Baths and Temple Complex, and amongst the finest
Roman remains in Europe. Mystical Stonehenge next
awaits you, where for over 5,000 years these
enigmatic stones have engendered a sense of
reverence in the millions who have visited them. Continue heading southwest towards
Stourhead, a world-famous garden laid out from
1741-80, where its lakes, temples and rare trees
form a landscape of breathtaking beauty throughout
the year. Barrington Court Garden in Somerset is a
tudor manor house restored in the 1920s, with a
garden laid out in a series of ‘rooms.’ Next head to South Devon and see Berry
Pomeroy Castle, a romantic late medieval castle
located halfway up a wooded hillside, which looks
over a deep ravine and stream. Escape to Trebah Garden, a 26-acre early
19th century ravine garden that falls to a private
beach on the Helford River. It is a paradise for
artists, gardeners, and families. Next head for St. Michael’s Mount, a
medieval castle on a tiny island linked to the
mainland by a causeway, before continuing to
Tintagel Castle, the legendary birthplace of King
Arthur. The extensive ruins of this medieval castle
cling precariously to the edge of a cliff. Finish your tour of the South West of
England with a trip to Lundy Island, which has an
historical pirate connection and a puffin habitat.

Avebury
Stone Circles Avebury,
which is one of the largest and most
impressive of the ritual 'Henge Monuments'
in Britain, was built in the Late
Neolithic period. It consists of a
massive, roughly circular earthwork,
enclosing an area of about 28 and a half
acres. Around the inner edge of the ditch
was, originally, a ring of 98 large
upright sarsens set at intervals of 36
feet. Within it stood an upright monolith
('The Obelisk') and an irregular line of
12 smaller stones.
Many stones were damaged or buried during medieval times and others were broken up and used for building work in the 18th century. Today, the stones, bank and ditch can all be explored. |

Bratton
Camp
Westbury White Horse is
perhaps one of the most famous landmarks in West
Wiltshire. A
perfect picnic spot, it has breathtaking views of
the Wiltshire and Somerset countryside. The
present White Horse was originally cut in 1778,
however, legend suggests that it rests on the site
of an even older horse that commemorated the
defeat of the Danes by King Alfred at Ethandun in
AD878. Bratton Camp is what remains of massive
fortifications of a 2,000 year old Iron Age Hill
fort. Its steep ditches and banks surround an even
older Neolithic barrow or burial mound

Broadleas GardensLady Anne Cowdray's
beautiful valley garden which she bought in 1946
and has been creating and developing ever since
the early sixties is an inspiration and a joy. The
inspiration comes from the knowledge that much
which has survived here might not have been
expected to, and the joy is of discovery. For here
are secret garden, winter garden, a woodland, a
sunken rose garden and a silver border packed with
plants which are unusual or rarely seen. Many are
normally thought to be too tender for central
southern England and more at home in the far west.
There is a small nursery and amongst the plants
for sale are many from the garden stock.

Bulford Kiwi Hill FigureA large figure, in the
shape of a Kiwi. (Faces right) on the gentle
slope of Beacon Hill just above Bulford Camp.
The kiwi was constructed to commemorate the now
gone Sling camp’s First World War New Zealand
Troop occupation (Feb-March 1919.) This was
carried out by the New Zealand Canterbury
Battalion Engineers from a design drawn by Percy
Blenkarne. The kiwi was looked after by the Kiwi
polish Co for a while as an advert, it was
covered during WWII particularly important
considering its proximity to the military camp.
The kiwi was neglected and was nearly lost in
the 70s and 80s but was restored in 1986. There
is a memorial plaque on the site unveiled in
1986. The kiwi is now attended to annually.

Crop Circles Each
summer, the Wiltshire countryside is host to a
strange phenomenon. Swirls of flattened corn,
or 'crop circles', litter the landscape like
fingerprints. The county of Wiltshire is one
of the most active areas for crop circles in
the world, particularly around the historical
stones of Avebury and Silbury Hill. In this
ancient landscape, the grassy whorls take over
the fields of rape, barley and wheat like
massive installation art. Crop circles are
geometric circles impressed in crops and other
types of vegetation and sometimes in sand,
gravel, earth, ice and snow. In Wiltshire,
widely recognised as the centre of crop
activity in the world, they are usually found
in fields of standing corn. Of the 175
recorded in England in 2000, 70 were found
within a 15 mile radius of Avebury. In 2001,
there were 184 crop formations recorded
worldwide, of which 102 were in the UK.
|
|
A
massive complex of swirls appeared at the top of
Milk Hill near Alton Barnes, Wiltshire. It could not
be seen from any public road and was discovered by
the pilot of a micro-light aircraft on August 13,
2001. The geometrical pattern is regarded as the piece de resistance of the 2001 crop circle season. The pictogram measured more than 800 feet across and covered about five hectares. |

lie to the north of Salisbury.
The garden provides a varied
collection of plants, shrubs,

especially in Spring and Autumn,
is the water garden, planted

January, great drifts of snow
drops and aconites bring early

Liddington
Hill
&
Castle Liddington Castle is a
late Bronze Age and early Iron Age hill fort
.
It is sited on a commanding high point close to the Ridgeway and covers an area of 3ha. Liddington Castle was one of the earliest hill forts in Britain, with first occupation dating to the seventh century BC. The earthworks consist of a relatively simple oval bank of timber and earth fronted by a ditch, with opposing causewayed entrances on the east and west sides. The western entrance was later blocked off and the eastern one may have been lined with sarsen stones. A palisade Finds of pottery suggest Liddington Castle was abandoned during the fifth century BC, with perhaps some later re-occupation during the Excavation within the hill fort revealed a large pit 1.5m in diameter and at least 2.4m deep. The bottom of the feature was not reached and it was interpreted by the archaeologists who dug it as a ritual shaft. Roman period. Liddington Castle is sometimes suggested as a possible site of Mount Badon and thus the location of the late fifth century AD Battle of Mount Badon in Arthurian myth. There is, however, no archaeological evidence to indicate activity during this later period. |

Unlike the
neighbouring castles of Uffington and Barbury, Liddington
Castle is relatively unvisited in spite of being a
clearly visible landmark to the millions who pass

Melksham
The
town of Melksham evolved at a ford
across the River Avon and was once
part of a vast royal forest that
stretched as far as Chippenham and was
a favourite hunting ground of Tudor
Kings. In the 19th century, the town
boasted the discovery of Saline and
Chalybeate springs, and an attempt was
made in 1815 to develop the town as a
spa that would rival nearby Bath. This
attempt failed, however you can still
trace some of the fine Regency
building in the town and, on the
outskirts of the town, it is possible
to see examples of the original fine
houses built as part of the spa
development.

Old Wardour Castle The unusual hexagonal ruins of
Old Wardour Castle stand serenely in its
lakeside setting, protected by acres of wood.
But this beguiling scene of tranquility masks
a bloodthirsty past - a terrible battle was
fought here in 1643 when Parliamentarian
forces besieged the castle for several weeks.
By the time the occupants surrendered, the
damage to the castle was extensive; an audio
tour brings to life the castles long history.
Today, surrounded by landscaped gardens which
include an elaborate rockwork grotto, Old
Wardour is a picturesque location for picnics
and a relaxing day out.

Tithe
Barn Bradford-on-Avon
is
the
home to one of the country's
finest examples of a medieval
Tithe Barn. Built in the early
14th century, this gigantic barn
was constructed to store the taxes
or "tithes" paid by the local
peasants. Produce would be brought
to the barn across the 14th
century packhorse bridge (still in
existence, picture below) which
was built especially for that
purpose. In 1971, the farmhouse,
barn, bridge and farm was
purchased by the local council and
became Barton Farm Country Park.

town of Bradford on Avon, on the southern edge of
the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Barton

Trowbridge Trowbridge,

county town of Wiltshire, lies in the
heart of the South West of England
approximately 10 miles from Bath. It
is considered the natural centre of
the region's five small industrial
towns and, with a population of
27,500, it is now the third largest
town in Wiltshire, after Salisbury and
Chippenham. As well as being the
county town of Wiltshire, Trowbridge
is also the administrative centre of
both Wiltshire County Council and West
Wiltshire District Council. The town's
lengthy history is recorded in the
museum which tells the fascinating
story of Trowbridge's people and past.
The woollen industry played a crucial
part in the town's development and the
museum is located in the last woollen
mill in Trowbridge, which closed its
doors as a mill in 1982.

Upavon
Golf
Club There
have been golf holes laid out on the site at
Upavon since shortly before the First World
War when the area was used for recreation by
the newly - formed Royal Air Force. By the
time the RAF vacated the site in 1993, the
layout of 10 greens and 18 tees were well
established. The departure of the RAF from
the base at Upavon saw significant changes
take place. The club became an autonomous
civilian members club, and acquired some
additional 40 acres of land adjacent to the
western boundary, enabling the construction
of additional holes. These were brought into
play in May 1997, forming an 18-hole, par 71

Hot
Air Balooning (Larmer Tree Gardens)
A hot air balloon ride from Larmer Tree
Gardens will carry you over magical gardens, colourful
shrubs, striking displays of colourful flowers, tranquil
woods, sunken dells and peacocks! They’re hard to miss
with their stunning azure plumage and graceful presence –
the peacocks of Larmer Tree Gardens wander regally around
the seemingly enchanted grounds. Set amidst the stunning
Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty, Larmer Tree Gardens have been
recognised by English Heritage as a Garden of National
Importance. Notably, they were also the first privately
owned gardens opened for the public to enjoy. On the
Dorset and Wiltshire border, Salisbury is set in rural
England’s heartland. If the wind carries you northwards
you will look out of your balloon basket over the
cathedral city of Salisbury itself which is home to one of
the finest medieval cathedrals in Britain. With the
tallest spire in Britain you should be able to spot it
towering above the pretty streets of the city. Look to the
east and you will have stunning views over the New Forest
National Park whilst westwards you might find yourself
drifting serenely over Shaftesbury or Sherborne; one of
the most beautiful towns in England with picturesque
almshouses, a superb abbey and an abundance of medieval
buildings. With the World Heritage site of Stonehenge,
Salisbury Cathedral and Longleat along with 13th century
buildings, quaint tea rooms, a host of art and culture
venues and 8,200 paths and trails to walk or cycle in
Wiltshire, a hot air balloon ride over this delightful
area will keep you entertained both in the air and down on
the ground. |

Virgin
Hot
Air Balooning (Salisbury Racecourse)
Just 4 miles west of the cathedral city of
Salisbury in Wiltshire lies Salisbury Racecourse. There
has been racing at this course since the mid-16th century
where many equine legends have seen success. It was at
Salisbury Racecourse in 1948 where the public first saw
Lester Piggott ride, now considered to be the best of his
generation and greatest English flat jockey with 4,493
wins during his career. A hot air balloon ride over
Salisbury Racecourse promises a much more serene kind of
ride than a thunderous gallop around a racecourse however.
Instead you can expect to catch a glimpse of the tallest
church spire in Britain belonging to Salisbury Cathedral,
one of the finest medieval churches in Britain. Salisbury
is situated in rural England’s heartland on the Dorset and
Wiltshire border. A hot air balloon ride south eastwards
will carry you over the New Forest National Park. If you
fly in spring look out for the wash of bluebells covering
the woodland floors and the New Forest cattle and ponies
grazing throughout the Forest in their various haunts. If
the wind carries you westwards you might find yourself
drifting serenely over Shaftesbury or Sherborne; one of
the most beautiful towns in England with picturesque
almshouses, a superb abbey and an abundance of medieval
buildings. With the World Heritage site of Stonehenge,
Salisbury Cathedral and Longleat, along with 13th century
buildings, quaint tea rooms, a host of art and culture
venues and 8,200 paths and trails to walk or cycle in
Wiltshire, a hot air balloon ride over Salisbury will keep
you entertained both in the skies and once back down on
the ground. |
